Essentially what we do as photographers, is we edit time and frame to compose a compelling image. What happens when the time element, that Cartier Bresson moment, is removed and that decision happens in editing? I remember working on a big ad job in the 80s talking with the CD about how they did their [...]
Super Batteries

Terry Richardson once said, if the picture is happening and you are not ready, you loose. Or as wonderful Otto Bell once said ” You have got to be in it to win it”. In other words, if you gear ain’t ready to shoot, you just lost a possibly great photo. I hate when that [...]
Charlottesville Festival of the Photograph
by David on 07. Jun, 2011 in blog, Stills
If I were on the East coast this weekend I would most definitely be going to Charlottesville for this. I have never ever regretted hearing other artists speak and understanding their process. I always leave totally stoked on being a photographer. This weekend looks particularly great. My friend Kathy Ryan is curating, there are a [...]
The importance of Photo Editors

“I cannot explain every image I have taken. If I tried to, it would be a sham and boring; it would come across as being trivial” Daido Moriyama When I take a picture, there is an intention, there is a feeling and there is a result. Some of the best pictures I take I have [...]
Adventures with iPhones
by David on 23. May, 2011 in blog, Gear
As you know, I have not been a fan of my iPhone 3GS on ATT. Cute fun toy, but not a reliable phone. This weekend I decided to take action, enough is enough. First I reviewed all the iPhone competitors. As much as my punk rock sensibility would like to ditch the ever present iPhone [...]
Werner Herzog on Truth
by David on 22. May, 2011 in blog, Moving image
“But my understanding of the truth is something that nothing can fully describe, not religion, not philosophy, not mathematics. It is vague by its very nature. Documentary is too fact-oriented, as if ‘the facts’ constitute the truth. They do not. That is my approach and I like it when other filmmakers do this. We are [...]

“Photograph what you love”. Sally Mann. “Love what you photograph” Me. Sally Mann is a genius artist. I am a successful commercial photographer. She gets to chose what she photographs. I get to chose how I feel about what I am photographing. Either way works. Related Posts:Nicole in K-townKamikazeThe ReelMichelleImages: Randy Bad w/headphones in his [...]

We flew in to NY weds on my favorite UA LAX-JFK flight (note, Charlotte Gainsbourg and posse in 1st class) for meetings and a quick editorial short. I love this town. There is nothing sexier than downtown Manhattan on a sunny day in May. Everybody is flirty, and everybody is dressed. Los Angeles is a [...]
Using the iPad with Capture One and Phocus
by David on 09. May, 2011 in blog, Gear, Stills
Each job we do, we learn something new, and this week’s 5 day Miami advertising job we used the iPad as a satellite viewing station for the first time. It worked fabulously. We used two camera systems, the Hassy H3D and the Canons. I know I dissed Canon last week, but is a good camera, [...]
Canon vs Nikon. In which I make chaos with my bank account.
by David on 28. Apr, 2011 in Business of Photography, Gear, Stills
Call it an itch, call it an irritation, but I am not feeling the love from my Canons these days. I am just really over it with the bad slow autofocus, the goofy plastic feeling bodies and the menus that must been designed by some dumb dumb washed out scientist. Sometimes we just need to [...]
